Mizkan on water


The Mizkan Group has enjoyed a close relationship with water from our founding in 1804. In order to produce high-quality brewed vinegar, we built water-supply infrastructure, and sailed our products across the sea from Handa-Owari to Edo (Tokyo).
Effective use of limited water resources
Food companies must take action on water - food production uses a large amount of our global water supply.


For example, 1800 L of water is required to produce 1 kg of corn.
Cattle consume a large amount of corn and other grains, so approximately 20,000 times more water is required to produce 1 kg of beef.

Our water initiatives

We aim to conserve water in our business activities, and are ever grateful for this precious resource. Food production uses a lot of water. In Japan, we are working to use water effectively in ways that are compatible with each production process. For instance, we save water by purifying waste water, and reusing cooling water and cleansing water. In North America, we set and monitor Key Performance Indicators and goals. In Europe, we have analyzed how water is actually used at our sites, and are now considering the 3R activities (reduce, reuse, and recycle). Sustainability is a growing focus for Mizkan. In the years to come, we plan to clearly define our sustainability targets across all the geographies where we operate and then work hard to achieve those goals.
