Biotope

To live in harmony with nature, Mizkan has developed a biotope in Yokawa-cho, Miki City, Hyogo. With a total area of roughly 23 ha (about 0.23 million ㎡) including our Miki plant, the biotope alone is some 12 ha (about 0.12 million ㎡) in size. This biotope not only helps to preserve the natural environment, but also contributes to maintaining ecological balance and to maintaining and controlling a safe, clean production environment in the adjacent food factory. It also plays an important role in protecting biodiversity.

What is a biotope?

A biotope is an artificial or restored habitat for animals and plants, created to enable them to live on a sustained basis. The word comes from the Greek “bios,” meaning “life,” and “topos,” meaning “place.”

Why we created a biotope

Today, we are faced with diverse environmental challenges, including increasingly serious energy issues and the need to maintain biodiversity. Mizkan’s business activities are made possible by the bounties of nature: water, microorganisms, and agricultural produce such as grain. Nature keeps the global environment sustainable, and enables us to provide safe and healthy products to our customers. We feel we must keep this in mind, and think about how we can contribute and take action as a company.

The biotope is also provided as a place where local volunteers can engage in activities that protect the natural environment while enjoying close contact with nature. Environmental surveys have confirmed the presence of many rare living things, including endangered species designated by Hyogo Prefecture and the national Ministry of the Environment.

Preserving nature for the well-being of the earth, society, and all that dwell on it. That is what drives us.
